About the Peacock butterfly
One of the UK’s most-loved butterflies, the peacock is recognisable by its brightly coloured wings with captivating eyespots. The butterfly’s striking eyespot pattern evolved to startle or confuse predators, making it one of the most easily recognised and well-known species. It is from these wing markings that the butterfly gets its common name. The underside of its wings is dark and resembles dead leaves. It is a fairly large butterfly and a strong flyer.
Though a regular visitor to garden buddleja in late summer, the peacock’s strong flight and nomadic instincts cause it to travel widely across the countryside, often favouring sheltered woodland clearings, gardens & meadows as its preferred habitats. Its caterpillars feed on the leaves of the common stinging nettle (Urtica dioica). The nettle’s sting is actually a deterrent to most creatures, but it does not affect the caterpillars, allowing them to consume the plant without harm.
The species is widespread and has continued to expand its range in the northern parts of Britain and Ireland.
