The red squirrel has been a native species of the UK for 10,000 years. Unfortunately, its population has decreased since the grey squirrel was introduced. With its tufted ears and bushy tail, the red squirrel is most active during autumn as it skilfully leaps around the woodland in search of pine cones, its favourite food.

The decline of the native Red Squirrel
Red squirrels are sadly under threat of extinction across Britain. The main reason is due to the introduction of the American Grey squirrel in the late 1800s. Grey squirrels are outcompeting red squirrels for resources and habitat, and they also carry the squirrelpox virus, which is often fatal to red squirrels. Grey squirrels are larger and more adaptable, allowing them to thrive in a wider range of environments than Reds.
Fewer than 287,000 red squirrels remain in the UK. The Red Squirrel Survival Trust are working to protect these beautiful native squirrels. Visit their website to find out about the ways you can help.
