British bees card set
This British bees card set contains 4 cards and kraft envelopes. Each A6 greeting card is blank inside, so you can easily add your own personal message. The reverse of each card includes a short description of each bee:
Common Carder Bumblebee
Distinctive by its furry, gingery-brown body and absence of white on its tail, the common carder bumblebee is widespread across the UK. Its favourite flowers include clover, bluebell, and lavender, which it accesses with its long tongue. It is a small, social species that likes to nest in long grass, moss mats on lawns, and cavities like old mouse runs or bird nests.
Honey Bee
In the wild, honey bees inhabit wooded areas and build large hives made of wax honeycombs. Recognisable by black-and-gold markings, they work tirelessly in large numbers to produce honey. Honey bees are essential to the UK’s ecosystem because they play a crucial role in pollinating crops, flowers and plants. Consequently, they support both biodiversity and food production, and ultimately help maintain healthy natural and agricultural environments.
Southern Cuckoo Bumblebee
The Southern Cuckoo Bumblebee is found in most habitats across the UK. It lacks a worker caste; instead, it relies on other bumblebees to rear its young. As a result, it typically invades nests of the Buff-tailed Bumblebee. As a parasitic species, it is considered an important part of the ecosystem by driving biodiversity and resilience among more dominant species.
Tawny Mining Bee
The tawny mining bee is a solitary bee species known for its distinctive orange-brown fur. Active in early spring, females create underground burrows where they lay their eggs. They then gather pollen from a variety of flowers, particularly willows and dandelions, which in turn provides essential nourishment for their developing young. Like all bee species, they are important pollinators, supporting local ecosystems and plant reproduction.
Individual cards from this British bees card set are available in the insect cards range.
