About
The honey bee (Apis mellifera) is one of the most important pollinators in the natural world. It plays a vital role in supporting ecosystems and agriculture by pollinating flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Without honey bees, many of the crops we rely on would struggle to grow, threatening food supplies and biodiversity. Honey bees live in highly organised colonies consisting of a queen, workers, and drones. A single colony can contain up to 60,000 bees. Remarkably, worker bees can visit thousands of flowers in a single day, collecting nectar and pollen. They also produce honey as a food source for the hive, especially during winter. Despite their importance, honey bee populations are in decline, largely due to habitat loss, pesticides, and disease.
Tips for Helping Pollinators
Avoid using pesticides and never spray open flowers.
Mow less often to allow lawn ‘weeds’, like dandelions, to flower – they’re a vital food source.
Provide fresh water for pollinators to drink and cool off.
Create nest sites for wild bees by leaving undisturbed patches of soil or using bee hotels. Try putting a Gardeners Beehive in your garden to attract wild honey bees, giving them somewhere to naturally nest. There are even options for collecting honey!
Plant a variety of nectar- and pollen-rich plants throughout the year
