About Tawny mining bees
This attractive, furry, ginger-coloured bee is a common sight in gardens, even in the heart of towns and cities. Many people may have several nesting in their lawns each year without realising it. What they might notice, however, are small, volcano-shaped mounds that appear on the lawn in early spring. These are different from ants’ nests, as they have a single hole at the top, around 4mm in diameter. Their nests cause no damage to lawns, and the small mounds of soil will disappear within a couple of weeks. There’s no need to remove them or try to deter these charming bees—simply enjoy their presence and keep an eye out for their fascinating associates, like bee-flies and nomad bees.
Tawny mining bees – harmless and helpful!
Tawny mining bees are completely harmless and do not sting. They are also excellent pollinators of garden plants, fruit trees, and crops such as oilseed rape. They are active mainly in spring and can often be seen foraging busily on sunny days in garden borders.
