Woodland mammals card set
Each A6 greeting card in the woodland mammals card set comes with a brown kraft envelope. Inside is left blank so you can add your own personal message. The reverse of each card includes a short description of the woodland mammal:
Bank vole
Throughout the UK, the bank vole can be found scurrying along woodland edges and hedgerows in search of fruit, nuts and small insects. Its large ears aid in keeping it alert for predators and it often prefers dense vegetation in order to remain inconspicuous. Unlike mice, all voles possess small eyes, short, hairy tails and blunt snouts.
Fallow deer
The fallow deer was brought over by the Normans and is now considered to be a naturalized species. It usually has a light ginger-brown coat with white spots, although some individuals may have darker brown or white coats. Herds tend to reside in deciduous woodland and feed on grasses, herbs and young broadleaf trees.
Red squirrel
The red squirrel has been a native species of the UK for 10,000 years. Unfortunately, its population has decreased since the grey squirrel was introduced. With its tufted ears and bushy tail, the red squirrel is most active during autumn as it skilfully leaps around the woodland in search of pine cones, its favourite food.
Weasel
Widespread in the UK, the weasel is small and agile which makes it hard to spot. With its chestnut-brown fur on top and creamy-white underparts, it can often be mistaken for a stoat but its entirely brown tail sets it apart. Due to its extremely high metabolism, this tiny mammal has a huge appetite!
Woodland mammals heavily rely on trees for various aspects of their lives, including shelter, food, and nesting or roosting sites. Read about the UK’s rich and diverse woodland habitats.
