About the birds in this card set:
Great Spotted Woodpecker
The strikingly patterned black & white great spotted woodpecker has a powerful thick beak designed for finding food, attracting mates and raising young in mature woodland. Whilst the female has a solely black & white head, the male has a red patch at the back of its head and juveniles, a distinct red crown.
Long-tailed tit
These sociable little birds are usually spotted in flocks of twenty or more during the winter. They build exquisite nests formed from moss, lichen & feathers and at night they huddle together to keep warm.
Nuthatch
Most at home in broad-leaved woodland, the nuthatch can also be found in gardens feeding on nuts, seeds and insects. With its large head, short tail and striking black eye streak, it is also unique in its extraordinary ability to walk head-first down trees.
Marsh tit
Notoriously difficult to distinguish from the willow tit, the marsh tit can be identified by its sneeze-like call. Despite its name, it’s mostly found in broad-leaved woodland, parks & gardens and has an excellent memory for finding its hoards of buried seeds.
