Widespread in the UK, the weasel is small and agile which makes it hard to spot. With its chestnut-brown fur on top and creamy-white underparts, it can often be mistaken for a stoat but its entirely brown tail sets it apart. Due to its extremely high metabolism, this tiny mammal has a huge appetite!

Did you know?
Weasels are part of the mustelid family. There are seven mustelid species in Britain: weasel, stoat, American mink, polecat, pine marten, otter and badger.
How to tell the difference between a weasel and a stoat
It can be tricky to identify between a stoat and a weasel if you are lucky enough to spot one. Mainly because they are both small, like to keep undercover and move fast! One sure way of telling is the tail. A stoat’s tail has a bushy black tip and is around half the length of its body. A weasel’s tail is short and stubby in comparison and solely brown. Their size is another thing to consider. Stoats are larger than weasels, typically measuring 30–40 cm in total body length, while weasels usually range from 20–27 cm.
