Description

Illustrated wildlife collective noun book

An illustrated treasury of wildlife collective nouns.

148mm square paperback book

Do you know your snuggle from your scurry?

In this book there are curious, beautiful and sometimes mischievous collective nouns for British wildlife.

Chosen to sit in harmony with my illustrations, some nouns date back to the fifteenth century, when writers enjoyed shaping language alongside their observations of the natural world. Others are more recent, inspired by affection and the simple pleasure of watching. Multiple collective nouns exist for some species, so in this book I have chosen my favourites, each one a reminder of our instinct to name not only the creatures around us but also the feeling they stir when seen together.

What is a collective noun?

A collective noun is one that refers to some sort of group or collective – of people, animals or things. Did you know that a group of long-tailed tits is collectively known as a snuggle?
