River Birds card set
Each A6 greeting card in the River birds card set comes with a brown kraft envelope. Inside is left blank so you can add your own personal message. The reverse of each card includes a short description of the river bird:
Mallard
The mallard is our most recognisable duck and ancestor to nearly all domestic breeds. The male (drake), has a colourful head with curly black feathers above its tail. In contrast, the female (hen) has a browny buff mottled appearance and an orange bill. Only the female duck quacks, while the male duck produces a quieter raspy sound.
Kingfisher
The kingfisher is widespread in the UK but difficult to spot as it quickly darts over slow-moving rivers and streams. Its striking orange and blue plumage can be admired when it is perched, fishing for its next meal. A pair of kingfishers takes turns burrowing into the riverbank, where they lay their eggs in a chamber at the end of a long tunnel.

Dipper
The dipper is mainly found in upland areas near fast-flowing rivers and streams. This unique songbird has a round, chocolate-brown body and is able to swim and dive underwater, helped by its third transparent eyelid. Often seen perched on a rock, it bobs up and down. This is believed to give it a better view of aquatic prey.
Grey wagtail
The grey wagtail is resident throughout most of the UK and, in contrast to its name, has a distinctive yellow rump and belly. However, unlike the similar-looking Yellow Wagtail, it has a slate grey upper, dark wings, and a very long tail. Commonly found on rocks beside fast-flowing rivers, it feeds on flying insects and occasionally snails and tadpoles.
