About the Otter
The otter is a semi-aquatic mammal that lives in the UK’s freshwater habitats. Elusive in nature, it’s most likely to be spotted at dawn or dusk. It’s a powerful swimmer, thanks to its elongated body, thick tail and webbed feet and builds its nest—known as a ‘holt’—in old cavities and tree roots along the riverbank.
There are 13 different species of Otter worldwide. Of those only one–the Eurasian Otter–lives and is native to the UK. The film Billy and Molly: An Otter Love Story is a beautiful true story about a young otter and how it changed the lives of Billy and Susan Mail forever.
