About the Jersey tiger moth
The jersey tiger is a beautiful moth with unmistakable bold black and orange wing patterns. Originally found primarily in the south of England, its distribution is increasing, making use of the UK’s warming climate to venture north. The adults are attracted to flowers like buddleja. The caterpillars prefer to eat plants such as common nettle, hemp-agrimony, borage, ground ivy and bramble.
Did you know?
• According to The Wildlife Trusts, the caterpillars often feed on plants that are considered weeds such as nettles and dandelions. Allowing wild areas in your garden is a great way of encouraging these moths!
• In contrast to the Jersey Tiger Moths’ black forewings and striking creamy-white stripes, their underwings can be different colours– either bright red, yellow or orange.
• They are active both in the day and night time from July to September
