British trees card set
This British trees card set contains 4 cards and kraft envelopes. Each A6 card is blank inside for your own personal message. The reverse of each card includes a short description of each bee:
Beech
A widespread naturalised tree forming majestic, shady beechwoods. In spring, silky young leaves emerge, providing food for caterpillars. Beechmast is vital for birds and mammals in autumn. Its smooth grey trunk and dense canopy create unique woodland ecosystems rich in fungi and invertebrates.
Hazel
A native woodland shrub vital for insects, dormice and early pollinators. Its yellow catkins appear in February, providing important late-winter pollen. Hazel nuts feed birds, squirrels and small mammals. Dense stems also offer nesting sites
and are traditionally coppiced, increasing habitat diversity.
Horse Chestnut
The horse chestnut is a naturalised tree introduced from the Balkans that is now common in parks, gardens, and village greens. In September, shiny mahogany conkers ripen in spiky shells, feeding squirrels and deer. Its flower ‘candles’ support pollinators, while large leaves host moth caterpillars.
English Oak
Also known as the pedunculate oak, the English oak is a native giant that supports more wildlife than any other UK tree. Its acorns feed birds and mammals, while its rough, crevice-filled bark shelters insects and lichens, providing protection and food sources for species that overwinter.
These British tree illustrations are also available in the tree postcard set.
Did you know?
Horse chestnut trees produce conkers that naturally contain saponins – a soapy compound once used for gentle cleaning. Some eco-enthusiasts still use conkers today to make DIY, planet-friendly laundry detergent! Check out Nancy Birtwhistle’s natural recipe
