About the 7-spot ladybird

The 7-spot ladybird is the UK’s most recognised beetle. Famed for its seven black spots on a red-orange body, it is widely found in gardens, fields and woodland.
A ladybird consumes around 5,000 aphids during its year-long life so is crucial in natural pest control and therefore popular among gardeners and farmers.

Did you know?

The humble 7-spot ladybird is one of our most popular beetles due to their importance to gardeners; not just hunting the aphids that feed on our prized plants, but also pollinating plants and shifting dung. The bright colours of ladybirds warn predators that they are distasteful, although some birds may still have a go at eating them. As well as their warning colouration, ladybirds also have another defence mechanism: when handled, they release a pungent, yellow substance from their joints (a form of ‘controlled bleeding’) that can stain the hands.
